I borrowed the subject line from my daily friend Mark Nepo in The Book of Awakening which you may now recognize as a regular resource. In his reflection for March 24th he writes “Seldom seen, growing along the ocean floor, the white-plumed anemone is a watery blossom. It is white lace opening under tons of black, opening as if bathed in the sun, while so far from the sun.” As I pondered this, what he describes as “feel[ing] the sun even in the dark” I heard in a new way, that beloved psalm of God’s tender care, number 139: “If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,’ even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.” The night will shine like the day… Even in our darkest times when love seems absent, we need to hold on to the truth of love. When we see suffering in our world, we are called to remember that peace is nonetheless, still a real thing. Nepo’s opening words are helpful to remember: “To be broken is no reason to see all things as broken.” Being faithful to what is true will help us find our way back into the light.
